A linear television channel (along with various non-linear services such as Bouygues Telecom), Canalsat, Numericable/SFR, and Free, was launched by BET France. Over time, channels that were siblings began to be rebranded under the BET name, including BET Jams , previously known as “MTV Jams”,, BET Soul (originally “VH1 Soul”), and SHO×BET (which showed all types of sci-fi films and was once called “Showtime Beyond”). Additionally (there was VH1), a spin-off of MTV that shifted towards reality shows and eventually focused on programming centering around Black American culture. In September 1982, BET established itself as a standalone entity, independent of other networks or programming blocks; however, due to limitations in channel space on local cable systems, it continued to share its frequency with other cable channels until digital cable expanded capacity.

Launched as a USA Network programming block on January 25 — 1980, BET evolved into a full-fledged cable channel in September 1982.
